Hi! Welcome to veggieTOT!
Having been a vegetarian since middle school, I thought I had everything figured out. And then I had a baby.
While I was sure my diet was healthy and right for me, my husband and I worried whether it would be healthy for our daughter too. I asked (several) pediatricians, friends who are dietitians, and Dr. Google if we could pull this off and the consensus was always: YES! A vegetarian diet is perfectly fine for a child, as long as you’re mindful that she’s getting protein, iron, B12, DHA and all that other good stuff.
Relief! Sweet, sweet relief. Because I don’t even know how to cook meat, so it would have been no bueno if I had to start now.
After that initial feeling of relief, I started seeking resources for vegetarian families. I found a little bit here and there, but there really wasn’t a ton of information all in one place. And that’s why I decided to start this blog.
I’m not an authority on nutrition or child-rearing. I just want to share what’s working for us, show you some delicious meal ideas, and create a space where other vegetarian parents can talk about their successes and failures.
Here’s What veggieTOT Is About
I’m a busy mom and I don’t have time for recipes with 20 ingredients and 2 hour prep times. The recipes I post here are for people like me. They’re simple to make, but full of whole food ingredients. I don’t believe food for babies and toddlers needs to be bland and I especially don’t think kids should subsist on cheese pizza, grilled cheese, mac & cheese…well, you get the idea. I believe that the time to introduce kids to interesting flavors and healthy foods is now.
